  	— The first time he served under Captain Burk for about one month in the year 1776 — the second under Captain Taylor for about on month in the year 1777 — the third time, for about one month in the year 1777 or 1778.  He was Captain — the fourth was under Captain Preston in the year 1778. — he thinks the fifth was under Captain Burk in 1779 — the sixth time he thinks he himself was the Commander in the year 1780 — the seventh was under Captain Preson in 1781 He resided in MOntgomery County when he entered the service, he was not engaged in any battle.  The principal part through which he marched were in Virginia and North Carolina.  Your applicant states there were no other companies at the same time with those he served, as they were ordered to guard the frontier, except in North Carolina, at which time there was a company of Malitia, commanded by Captain Saunders.

  Major Daniel Howe, an officer in our War for Independence, was often on detached service in search of Tories. The story is told that one John Haven, of Plum Creek, was suspected of being a Tory, and that Major Howe was sent on more than one occasion to arrest Haven, but was unable to do so, and that finally a pretty, black-eyed daughter of Haven, whose name was Nancy, caught the Major and she became his wife, as already stated. David E. Johnston – 1906 At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the army against the Indians, and was probably with Col. Christian on his epedition to join Gen. Andrew Lewis in his campaign in 1774, and arriving upon the battlefield of Point Pleasant, the day after the battle, of which he gave a description.  He afterwards enlisted as a Revolutionary soldier, and served at intervals throughout the war, attaining to the rank of captain.  He belonged to Capt. Henry Patton's Company of Col. William Preston's Regiment, but served under various other commanders, and was engaged principally on the frontier of Virginia and North Carolina.  After the Revolution he became a Major in the militia.  He succeeded to the "Sunnyside" homestead of his father, where he died 2 Jan. 1838.  His tombstone is in the cemetery on the old homestead bears this inscription, "In youth a soldier of the Revolution, in old age a soldier of the cross." There are not many descendants of Daniel Howe, who bear the family name, but all who do, live in Southwest Virginia.  There are, however, a large number of them who bear other names than Howe, who live in Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri and on the Pacific Coast. In religion the Howes of Virginia, and their descendants, with few exceptions, were Presbyterians, and in politics were Democrats.  The greater number of those of military age, saw active service on the Confederate side, during the Civil war.  Several of Daniel Howe's descendants were killed at the battle of Cloyd's Farm, fought in the neighborhood of the old homestead; a grandson died a prisoner of war, another was wounded and taken prisoner at Gettysburg, and another remianed in the service until Lee's surrender.
