Confederate Army |
- He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 6 March 1862, serving in Company D, 9th Georgia Battalion, Leyden's Artillery (Major Austin Leyden). He served for three years, and was wounded in the wrist at Appomattox, VA, on 8 April 1865 -- the day before Lee's surrender.
The following is taken from "Confederate Military History, A Library of Confederate States History, in Twelve Volumes, Written by Distinguished Men of the South, and Edited by Gen. Clement A. Evans of Georgia....", Vol. VI. Atlanta, Confederate Publishing Company. 1899. Pp. 727-728.:
"Green B. Holder, of Rome, served as a Confederate soldier with the Ninth Georgia battalion of artillery in east Tennessee and Virginia. He was born at Lawrenceville, Ga., and left home at the age of fifteen years to fight for the South, enlisting in Capt. T. M. Peeples' company, D, of the Ninth Artillery battalion. He was mustered into the Confederate service near Bristol, Tenn., in March, 1862, and was on active duty until the surrender at Appomattox.
After participating in numerous engagements in east Tennessee and southwest Virginia, among them the battle of Wytheville, Va., he took part in the operations against the Federal column under General Hunter that was threatening Lynchburg in the spring of 1864, and after the defeat of the enemy, campaigned down the Shenandoah valley as far as Winchester. Then, under orders from Richmond, he and his comrades turned over their guns at Wayne's Gap, and went to Richmond, where they were on duty with the heavy artillery.
During the siege of Richmond and Petersburg, July, 1864, to April, 1865, they were on duty at Fort Gilmer and Fort Hoke, and when the Confederate lines were finally broken, April 2, 1865, they spiked their siege guns, blew up their magazines, and marched out with Lee's army.
On the evening before the surrrender at Appomattox Court House, he was wounded in the wrist. Reaching home on April 29, 1865, Mr. Holder remained there for a few months, and in December following made his home in Floyd County.
At Lindale he was engaged as a merchant until 1899, when he retired and gave his attention to real estate. For a number of years he held the office of commisioner of Floyd county. He has a wide acquaintance throughout the county and is recognized as one of its leading men. In politics he has taken an active part as a Democrat, and with his old comrades he is yet affiliated as a member of the Floyd county camp, United Confederate veterans.
He has six sons and six daughters living: Edward W., a merchant at Rome; WIlliam I., railroad agent at Lindale; Scott Thomas, in business at Huntsville, Ala.; Briscoe, of Birmingham; Luther M., Charlie B., Ida J., Anna M., Ella, Emma, Netie and Elizabeth."

CAPT. CORPUT HEADS
ROME MERCANTILE CO.
At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Rome Mercantile company, G.B. Holder, who has been the president of the concern for a number of years, and in active charge of its affairs, declined re-election. He gave as his reason the fact that he had recently agreed to act as agent for the State Mutual Life Insurance Co., in handling its realty, and that this would prevent him giving sufficient time to the duties of the Mercantile Company. Captain Felix Corput was elected to succeed Mr. Holder as president. E.E. Holder is vice-president, and A.D. Starnes is secretary.
These three, with D.W. Curry, and C.R. Porter, make up the board of directors. The finance committee is composed of D.W. Curry, E.E. Holder an[d] C.R. Porter.
The company, which does a large business throughout this section, declared a good dividend.

G.B. Holder Dies Thursday Evening

This "noble Roman" was a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., and went from there to the Confederate army when a mere boy. He enlisted in Co. D, of the 9th Georgia batallion, Layton's artillery and served in it for three years, being wounded in the wrist the day before the surrender at Appomattox, and going with Lee's men in their dreary marches three days before having the wound dressed.
On his return from the army, Mr. Holder located in Rome, in 1865, and has lived in this county continuously. For a while interested in farming and then in the mercantile business, Mr. Holder acquired a grasp on the local business situation that has made him a bulwark in the community. The people of Floyd Co. have many times recognized the integrity and ability of this man. Twice was be [sic, he] elected to the Board of county commissioners, twice to the state legislature and many times to other honors. An enthusiastic singer, he served for many years as an officer of the Floyd County Singing Convention and his ability was given wider recognition by his appointment as a member from the United Sacred Harp Association to reviese [sic] their songbook. This work he completed with remarkable credit to himself.
In the business world of Rome the name of G. B. Holder was found on many directorates, he being president of the North Georgia Fertilizer Co., and the Rome Mercantile Co. Mr. Holder was joined by marriage early in life to Miss Swords, of Cobb county, and is survived by a family of five sons and six daughters.

To Camp No. 368, U.C.V.
Your Committee appointed to write a few lines in memory of a member of this Camp submit the following:
There is a last roll call which is being answered by those who wore the grey and also those who wore the blue. Comrade Green B. Holder is no more with us, he answered the last call June 18, 1914. With folded arms he bid comrades, friends and loved ones adieu.
Comrade Holder was born at Lawrenceville, Georgia [sic], December 22, 1845. What we gather concerning his war record is the following:
Comrade Holder in March 1862 was mustered Into the Confererate [sic] Army in Capt, T..M. Peeples Company "D" with Battalion Light Artillery at Bristol, Tennessee, said Battalion was in many engagements in East Tennessee and West Virginia. After the fight at Wythville, Va. in the spring of 1864 they campaigned down the Shanandoah [sic] Valley to Winchester, then under orders from Richmond they turned over their guns at Waynes Gap and went to Richmond where they were put in heavy Artillery. During the seige [sic] of Richmond and Petersburg, July 1864 to 1865 they manded [sic manned the guns in forts [sic] Gilmer and Hoke. On April 2, 1865 when the Confederates could no longer hold the forts they spiked their seige [sic] guns and blew up their magazine and marched out with Lee's Army to or near Appomattox. On the evening before the surrender Comrade was wounded In the wrist. Comrade Holder was parolled [sic] with Lee's Army.
He reached his Georgia home on the 29th of April. In December following he moved to Floyd County. For a time he engaged in merchandising,, afterwards in real estate. One of your Committee by his vote elected Comrade a member of the Board of County Commissioners and he made an acceptable member. Afterwards he served two years in the General Assembly of Georgia. Comrade Holder was President of the Rome Mercantile Company and other industries. He was a good neighbor, good business man and a true friend to both white and colored. He was a great lover of old sacred harp songs. His life long Consort recorded him only a few months to the haven of rest. They left with their friends and comrades to mourn their passing away twelve children, six sons and six daughters. We extend the bereaved ones sincere sympathy. We respectfully ask that a page in our Minute Book be ascribed to the memory of comrade G.B. Holder, and we further ask that our Adj. Send a copy to either Miss Emma or Miss Ida Holder.
