He served as a private in company D 80th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged from service due to a disability while in service. October 8, 1862, during the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, while moving an ammunition wagon over a hill, he strained himself caussing a rupture (or hernia) on his left side. he was treated in the Marine Hospital at Cincinnati, OH, in january and part of February, 1863, and later in February was moved to CampDennison Hospital in Ohio.
