GUSTAVUS LYLE MASTIN died at his home on Franklin Street at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 10th after a most painful illness. He was born in Fincastle, Virginia January 1, 1815, was taken to Tennessee when a small child and remained in that state under the care of his grandfather, Solomon Hoge until Jane (January or June?), 1827, when he moved to Huntsville. He has resided in Huntsville ever since. Was one of the earliest of University of Alabama students. In 1833, he entered the mercantile busines.... Since 1858, he has been a planter in Madison County. Was a leading member of one of the most numerous and highly respected families in the South. Leaves a large family.
