  	I half-remember as a child being asked what it would make the mother of my grandmother if she married my grandfather's father.  It was a man who had been talking, after I had asked about who my ancestors were.  And I remember now (and haven't been able to get it out of my mind for a week) that he also said she wore wooden shoes.  I remember thinking how uncomfortable they must be and how they (and her feet) must stink after awhile – because I assumed wooden shoes didn't wear out. And looking at the photograph, I noticed the line of her feet.  Is it my imagination, or is she wearing wooden shoes in the photograph?

  Perhaps named for Mount Sinai as her grandnephew affirms, Syna lived four days after her 96th birthday.  Her days were added in a time when disease often failed to be prevented and one contracted, seldom cured. Syna was born in Georgia and knew Alabama to be her home as early as 1840.  1853 marked the year of her first marriage.  Syna was 21.  Ideally, families were large during the 1800's, but one child was better than none.  Darthula Clementina Jett wasn't the only daughter born unto this marriage, but perhaps she was the only child to know her father.  Sarah Frances Jett was born June 11, 1861. Whether for grief, self-sufficiency, or a combination of human qualities, the state of widowhood persisted year after year and years after.  A decision was made in 1875 to marry again.  Syna's interests in this matter were more for her daughters than herself.  The wedding in 1875 was the second of its type, taking place after Darthula Clementina Jett married Joseph Mahoney Hogue, son of Lemuel Hogue.  To completely unite the two families, Syna married Lemuel who was a widower himself. Both marriages successfully bound the two families together and by 1870, the family removed north to Cherokee County, Alabama, home of the Hogues before venturing south. Syna's brother Abner J. Carroll resided near Cherokee County and such familiarity comforted Syna after leaving parents and sisters miles away. Syna's young, tenderhearted daughter Sara Frances Jett was quick to fall in love and marry Leander Tucker.  They gave their wedding vows on Christmas Day 1878.  Syna resided with the Tucker Family since the 1890's until 1928, during which time "Granny Hogue" added joy and laughter to the family by conversing in her peculiar Dutch accent.
