Bolton Castle
On his father's death in 1609 he became the 11th Lord Scrope of Bolton. In the same year he had married Lady Elizabeth Manners, daughter of the 4th Earl of Rutland, but this marriage would remain childless. He was summoned to Parliament from 5 April 1614 until 17 May 1625. On 19 June 1627 he was created Earl of Sunderland. However, he died aged only forty-five in 1630 and was buried at Langar. As he was without legitimate issue, the title of Earl of Sunderland became extinct. With the title of Baron Scrope of Bolton being regarded as dormant, the bulk of his estate went to the four children he had fathered by Martha Janes, or Jeanes or Jones, otherwise Sandford, 'his servant, daughter of a poor taylor living in Twifield Heath, Buckinghamshire'.
These four children were (1) John Scrope, otherwise Jones, otherwise Sandford, who held Bolton Castle for the king and was fined 7,000 pounds stirling as a delinquent; he died of the plague and was buried 31 July 1646; (2) Mary, who first married Henry Carey, Lord Leppington, and as his widow then married Charles, 6th Marquess of Winchester who in 1689 became the first Duke of Bolton; (3) Elizabeth who married Thomas Savage, 3rd Earl Rivers; and (4) Annabella who was given a grant to style herself as her father's legitimate daughter and was married to John Grubham Howe.
